On October 10, 1967, a group of interested citizens met in St. Ambrose Social Hall to consider forming a Boys’ Club in Yarmouth. Mr. E.A Cotton, Eastern Regional Director, Boys’ Club Canada, was the speaker. It was unanimously agreed that the need for such a club was apparent in Yarmouth. The meeting resulted in the official starting point for the Boys’ Club in Yarmouth. A committee of ten was appointed to arrange the formation and incorporation of the Boys’ Club of Yarmouth. It was planned to organize the club in the South End, where the need for a recreation area for young boys and girls is greatest. The Club will be mainly for those children who are not taking part in existing organized activities, and is not in any way intended to conflict with the YMCA or other groups. Boys’ Club of Yarmouth incorporated under the Societies Act of Nova Scotia the 27th day of December 1967. Mr. and Mrs. R.G. Webber of Armdale, NS placed the premises at 11 Bond Street for the use of the Club.
“A Place to Go…… A Way to Grow”
The Yarmouth Boys’ Club opened August 9, 1967 and as of September 7, registered 130 boys. The average attendance was 60 boys at 2 sessions daily, from 4:00-5:30pm and 7:00-9:00pm.
The Motto “Fun with a purpose”
Describes the work of Boys’ Club, in providing a place for youngsters to take part in organized, recreational activities. Activities such as; hobbies, classes, gymnasium, swimming, games, library, reading, leadership training and study are ways that various clubs keep members active.
1971
November 24
The Notre Dame Parish Council made the Youth Center available to the Boys’ Club on Saturday afternoons. Boys’ Club expanded their program and scope in an attempt to provide a healthy atmosphere for the youth of Yarmouth. Most Clubs have an age limit of 16, whereas Yarmouth is 18, one room was set aside for the older boys. A plan, in the formulative stage, to start up a Girls’ Club, who’d use the Boys’ Club facilities 1-2 nights a week. The Club would take in girls 8-16 years of age.
Yarmouth Boys’ Club Recreation Program
During the months of June, July and August, The Yarmouth Boys’ Club, with assistance of a Young Canada Work Grant, provided a recreation program for Yarmouth children. The main emphasis was on sports and other activities, as well as indoor activities at Bond Street.
1982
A Day Care Center was added to the clubs operation in its first year.
September 8- Children’s recreation programs in Yarmouth in the summer were a huge success. Boys & Girls Club of Yarmouth reported large turnouts for their activities. Boy & Girls Club of Yarmouth ran week-long day camps, as well as a supervised playground Day Care program. 50-70 children a day, attended programs which were free, and open to children 12 and under.
September 22- Boys and Girls Clubs were financially secure and ready to build for the future ambitious plans. Plans for a new Day Care to go on Club land on Bond Street, south of the present Club building. Hopes to begin construction October 15, 1982.
For over three years, the Club succeeded in revitalizing the playground, rebuilding its own clubhouse and in cooperation with the Yarmouth Day Care Charitable Foundation, building one of the largest structures made for day care.
1983
February 2- Yarmouth Day Care Operation Expanding Facilities and Service.
Another 30 children in Yarmouth will have access to the day care thanks to the opening of the Boys & Girls Club of Yarmouth’s new day care facility. Now, the day care services up to 75 children. A new 4,400 square foot facility takes up virtually ½ of the building. 60 of the 75 seats are subsidized by the government.
1990
School Aged Programs for children from Primary to Grade 6
There are 2 supervised lunch programs at Milton, Yarmouth Central, South Centennial and Arcadia Schools. A Breakfast Program, Lunch Program and Afterschool Program are offered at Bond Street. The afterschool program is accessible to children from most schools. South Centennial can walk; Arcadia arrives by bus; Central and Milton are transported by taxi at 0.50 cents per day. Open full days for school closures.
The Basketball and Ball Hockey courts are provided by Boys & Girls Club of Yarmouth for South Centennial.

At a special meeting, it was voted by the Board of Directors that the Boys & Girls Club of Yarmouth would endorse, uphold and adhere to the Mission and Core Values of the Boys and Girls Club of Canada, and the Boys & Girls Club of Yarmouth would be willing to sign the membership agreement with the National Office when it is forthcoming. It was also passed that the Boys & Girls Club of Yarmouth agreed with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada that we will conduct its operation and affairs in full accordance with all applicable laws.

September 2- Day Care Site at Burridge Campus opened.

Boys & Girls Club of Yarmouth becomes BGC Yarmouth, a more modern name that reflects that all are welcome to our Clubs and programs.
